Methodology of Healing

by Dr. Kevin O’Hara D.C.

What’s the main difference between wellness care and standard medical care? Standard medical care seeks to treat a symptom by adding something from the outside: a medication, a surgery or procedure. Wellness care, on the other hand, allows the body’s natural healing ability to help itself— not by adding something to the system, but by removing anything that might interfere with normal functioning— trusting that the body will know what to do if something interferes with its natural operations.

Inside Out vs. Outside In

When a patient has high blood pressure, the standard medical approach would be to choose a drug that will lower it and advise the patient to take the medication. While this choice serves to bring down the blood pressure, it ignores the underlying cause and also runs the risk of side effects, complicating the person’s recovery. There’s also the uncertainty if it’s due to a nutritional issue, faulty control by the nerve system, or a manifestation of stress.

The Wellness Approach

Wellness is a state of optimal conditions for normal function, and then some. This approach looks for underlying causes of disturbances and disruptions— which may or may not be causing symptoms at the time— and choose whatever interventions and lifestyle adjustments would be necessary to optimize normal performance. Such a method encourages natural healing, minimizing the need for invasive treatment, which should be administered only when absolutely necessary.

When the body works properly, is allowed to heal well and maintain its health, it tends to heal effectively no matter what the condition. While some people suffer psychological disorders, creating an atmosphere of mental and emotional wellness addresses all but the most serious problems. It is another level of well-being that goes beyond asymptomatic or pain-free that is conducive to an open-ended opportunity for vitality, vibrant health, and an enhanced experience of life. This is true for mental, emotional, and physical health.
